Storm Conference 8th–10th September 2023

Storm Conference 8th–10th September 2023

The correspondence of Theodor Storm and his parents in the period between the failed Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848-51) and the German Danish War of 1864 is the focus of this year’s Conference. Together with the never-before-published letters of Constanze Storm, which often came with her husband’s letters, and the likewise still unknown return letters of Lucie Storm (née Woldsen), Storm’s mother, as well as a few letters of Storm’s father Johann Casimir, the letters provide a deep insight into a biographically and literarily significant decade of the poet’s life.

After years of research, Dr. Regina Fasold is now bringing the massive editing project to a close just in time for the Conference. On Saturday morning, 9 September, she will present the over 1000-page annotated volume of letters after Dr. Carina Lehnen of the Erich Schmidt Verlag has ceremoniously handed over the book. Afterwards, young actors directed by Frank Düwel will read the correspondence.

The Büchner Prize winner Felicitas Hoppe will also talk about departure, journey and the longing to return. Husum’s new Storm Writer will open the Conference on Friday evening, 8.9, in the Knights’ Hall of Husum Castle.

On Saturday evening, 9.9, we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Storm Society at the same venue. At the founding ceremony on 15 September 1948 in the Nissenhaus in Husum, Dr. Franz Stuckert gave the lecture "Theodor Storm in our time". 75 years later, Dr. Tilman Spreckelsen, feuilleton editor of the FAZ, will speak using the same lecture title. In addition to musical accompaniment and greetings, we are preparing a special surprise that awaits us after the festive buffet, which this time will be enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere at bar tables. We will be treated to the excellent cuisine and courteous staff of the Husum Handwerkerhaus in the Castle as well.

Storm’s last journey took him to the North Sea island of Sylt in 1887. We will follow the poet´s journey and visit the Sylt Museum in Keitum, beautifully situated on the seashore, where, after a guided tour of the exhibitions and the Old Frisian House located in the same area, we will be hosted by the Sylt Country Butchery.
